New Project:BMW R80/7

So I wasn’t planning on getting into another project this year but the BMW turned into a too hard to pass up deal. Brian posted on facebook motorhugger group a craigslist ad for a BMW R80/7 that some one posted for $600. I immediately called the guy and asked what was wrong with it. He said the body was in ok condition and the tank had a dent in it. He also said the oil line to the oil cooler broke during a trip and he had to make a quick fix. He ended up pluging up the lines and not installing the “$2000″ ring correctly which causes low oil pressure. This could cause damage to crank shaft, connecting rods, bearings, and journals. He didn’t want to get into it and just wanted to sell it.
The bike was in St. Peter and was 1.5 hrs away. I got the okay from the wife to take Khanh on a little road trip to look at it. When I saw that bike, I realized the guy’s definition of “ok” is a lot different then mine. I would have to to say for a 34 yr old bike, the body was in pretty good shape. The dent in the tank was a 1/4″ shallow dent that you can barley see. I can understand why he didn’t want to deal with the engine but the parts alone was worth more then what he was asking. I figured worse case scenario, I can always part out the bike and make at least 2k from it on ebay. I ended up getting the bike for $400+ gas + time.
Nice thing is that she runs and starts just fine. There is a knock at low rpms but still has power. I got it on the work stand tonight and started tearing into it. Here’s some pictures of the bike and tonight’s progress. I’ll let you know what I find out.
